Fall Chores

I just got a big one out of the way.  Chicken pen is officially scooped out and the compost is on the garden.  Hopefully that will help with the garden modifications I’m making.  I had been working it as several smaller beds.  Now I’m going to do more of a traditional row garden.  Every year seems to bring some sort of modification to mind.

Speaking of the garden.  Soon I’ll be ripping out spent plants.  I thought I might today but I decided the chicken pen needed cleaned out more immediately and the compost would help make the changes.  I will be also needing to hose down and sanitize my tomato cages.  I wouldn’t normally do that but this year I’ve got some sort of disease/virus/herbicide in the tomatoes so I don’t want to take any chances for next year.

I have one more small pot of tomatoes on the stove cooking down for sauce.  Our own sauce will be worth its weight in gold this year.  I had to buy tomatoes to do what little sauce I’ve got.  I’ll have onions, garlic, and potatoes though.  I still need to harvest the last round of onions and the potatoes.  The potatoes I might just mulch and dig throughout the winter.  It worked surprisingly well last year in spite of not covering the bed and getting week long stretches of -30 degrees.

I see my little helper has crashed so I’d better get some other work done while she sleeps.
